St Brandon’s Church, Brancepeth

St Brandon’s is a small rural church located in the village of Brancepeth, approximately four miles south west of Durham City. 

This was once one of the most outstanding medieval churches in the Diocese of Durham, embodying elements from the 12th to the 15th Centuries as it was gradually enlarged. It was much enhanced in the 17th Century including the addition of the extraordinary north porch.

The building was completely devastated by fire in 1998; the fire took with it all of the church’s interior, the roofs and the stained glass. Since then an extensive period of repair and rebuilding has taken place including new roofs, new windows and new interiors, including a spectacular East Window commissioned from Helen Whittaker at Barley Studios.

The building acts as a centre for the village community and the church provides activities for local young people, and a venue for concerts, retreats, recordings and other events.

The Trust was very pleased to support the church with £5000 for stonework repairs not covered by insurance funded repairs.
